“Bio” is, of course, appropriate for a page describing a person’s life, since the prefix bio comes from the Greek bios, meaning “life.” My career in photography began after receiving a coveted degree in “geobiology” (which I put to good use each summer when my little girl and I go “fossil hunting” on the banks of the Missouri River), which has nothing whatsoever to do with taking pictures.
After years of balancing a full-time position as “staff photographer” for national businesses (Gateway actually knighted me “photographic artist” and gave me a higher sense of calling) with freelance projects and an unquenchable desire to retreat to my darkroom to make “ real art” – I threw the dice, took a risk, and became an “independent commercial/advertising photographer.” (I refrain from referring to myself as a “freelancer” since that implies that I may or may not decide to get out of bed in the morning … and even if that were the case, the decision is no longer up to me anyway … the puppy and the 5-year-old are ultimately in charge of my circadian rhythms.)
As an independent contractor — with a wife who is also “independent” (professionally) — I have the luxury of finding and paying for my own medical insurance, which — along with three kids, a mortgage, and a boat — truly IS the stimulus to get out of bed and please my clients every day.
